It all started when…

Our story begins with a little brown puppy named Foster, who lived with me Cape Charles. Foster loved to play at the beach and was curious about everything and everybody. He wanted to stop and greet all the dogs and children and grown-ups he met. He wagged his tail and gave many kisses to his new friends.

Foster’s mom also met many new people and dogs who became their friends. We decided to open an ice cream shop, so that everyone could be together—but especially so Foster could have a place to visit with all of the families and dogs he had met.

In 2012, Brown Dog Ice Cream changed the landscape of Cape Charles,

and Foster became the enthusiastic greeter.

And so the idea of brown dog ice cream came to be. Making ice cream seems simple! But in reality, making a lot of delicious ice cream involves many different fresh ingredients and very special equipment. So Foster's mom began to study all of the possibilities and to experiment with new ice cream recipes. Her friends and family members volunteered to help taste each new batch!

By 2012, the recipes were ready and the new shop had been built. And all of Cape Charles, locals and visitors alike, fell in love with Foster and his ice cream shop right away. On many days, Foster came and greeted people on the street from the new brown dog golf cart!

Foster’s mom and her smiling staff welcomed everyone inside to try the latest new flavors, made with the finest real vanilla and chocolate, hand-picked local peaches or blackberries, and locally roasted coffee. Foster nudged his mom to name some of her new flavors after his friends—sweet puppies named Poncho, Mae, and Roxie.

And Foster, who loved the smell of fresh-baked pastries, also got his mom to make waffles and donuts and churros to go along with the many new flavors of ice cream. And of course everyone wanted to have a hat or shirt or mug showing Foster, to remember all of the special summer days by the bay, with brown dog ice cream for dessert.

Today, we remember Foster and all of his friends with a joyous heart as we make some of the world’s happiest ice cream in the magical town of Cape Charles. Our goal is to see a smile on the face of every family member, grandchildren to grandparents, as they enjoy what matters most to us: being together and having an ice cream crafted with love.
